Uhhhh...hi....can I speak to...

For my "do something different" experiment thingee, I decided to do two things: minimize my internet usage and answer the phone differently.
The internet thing was hard. I didn't realize how addicted to Facebook, email and MSN I was until I went to avoid it for at least one day. The only thing I checked was my Seneca mail and Blackboard. Aaaaaand then I gave in and checked my Facebook messages. I know, I know! I'm WEAK.
Which is why I started doing the phone thing. Now THAT was fun. I highly suggest that everyone try this one out because it is tres amusant. Instead of saying the standard "Hello?" when answering the phone I would answer with something different like, "hey", "hi there", "bonjour", "greetings", "salutations", and once I threw in an Uncle Jesse-esque "talk to me!"
The reactions of other people on the end of the line when I answered the phone was quite humourous:
(Ring ring)
Me: Bonjour!
Other person: Ummm...is, uh, your mother there?

I also had a "Ummm...I think that I, uh, have the wrong number" from one of my friends, to which I replied, in a very poor French accent, "Oh, Ok. Goodbye." And then waited for them to call back.

Oh....fun times, messing with people.

Random sketches I did while I was avoiding the internet:

Something Completely Unassuming

On Tuesday and Wednesday, I was keeping track of all the times that I came into contact with or saw something made of glass. The reason I haven't posted earlier than today is because I have also been avoiding the internet - except for my school email and the My.Seneca Blackboard stuff - for the other half of my self experiment (which will be explained in another blog post).

So this glass thing. Holy geeze you come into contact with it a lot and don't even notice it. Here's a list of SOME of the places I found it:

  • Broken into bits on the ground
  • The windshield in the car
  • My juice cup/bottle
  • The windows of the GO bus and GO train
  • At work: glass of the fridge door, alcohol bottles, the side of the popcorn popper, candy dispenser, safety edges of balcony, cases that contain the movie posters, all the lights, the enter and exit doors
  • The vase in my room
  • Various picture frames
  • The paperweight on my desk
There were a bunch of other places too, they but were mostly repeats of doors and lightbulbs and stuff like that.

But seriously, the stuff is everywhere and you'd never really notice it or pay attention to it if you weren't doing so purposefully like I was.

"I know you're there Mr. Ninja!"

I love Dwight from "The Office".

Read this entry from his web log about Ninja Preparedness.
This gives me so many ideas for thing s - mostly centered around ninjas.

"If I had a tail, it would be wagging"

6 shots. 30 seconds. 1 story. 1 short film.

Hard, but possible. And that is what makes it such fun.

I tell you, I am so excited for this video project right now that if I had a tail, it would be wagging like crazy. The only thing left to do is to come up with the story that I want to tell. I can't waste space - I only have 6 shots - all different - to tell it in. I think I may develop a story about a kid who really wants to eat a cookie. Or a brownie. Time to storyboard! My favourite part! You know, besides the screenwriting, cinematography and editing bits.

Other things:

I think I've figured out the heart thing in Illustrator, but I'll have to wait for class. I'm writing this during break, you see. I've managed to make it all stylized and pretty without having to break any curves, which is why I think I'm doing it incorrectly. But it looks good. Ish. The way I am doing it is thus:

Put down a point, pull up the bezier handle in the direction I want the first lump thing to go, lay down the point for the valley; hold down ALT and swing the bezier handle around so that it goes in the direction of the next lump. Then I do the right side of the heart, then lay down the bottom point and do the ALT swing thing again, to complete the left side of the heart and connect at the first point and round it out a bit. It takes a little moving around with the direct selection tool, and some tweaking, but it looks nice and symmetrical.

But still, is that the right way? Someone tell me, PLEASE.

OK, kids. Time to boogie.

Cheers!

"In my world, knees are non-existent"

OK, so here's my DMA Blog on my creative process. YAY!!!

Now on the the yammering:

Something I'm really having a hard time with right now is proportion. I really like to draw cartoon characters, and I'm alright when it comes to the face and facial expressions, it's just that I don't really know how to proportion the body correctly so that the person looks semi-normal. For some reason I really have a hard time with legs. They end up looking like sausages wearing knee socks half the time. Knees are apparently non-existent in the world that I live in. Feet are tiny "U"s colored in black.

*sigh...*

On to other things:

Super excited about Video class tomorrow. That course is more or less the REASON I was attracted to DMA in the first place. I love shooting videos. It's incredibly fun and challenging at the same time! (Wow, how cheesy did THAT just sound?!)

Well, off to practice Illustrator hearts for Joe's class tomorrow (*stupid S-curve...grrr...*) but I THINK I may be getting it...(?).

Laaaaates.
