Day to Night Conversion

With the help of videocopilot.net (Andrew Kramer is a GENIUS) I learned how to do some Day-to-Night conversion. To learn this technique for yourself, watch his tutorial HERE.

I've provided some screen grabs of what I did to end up with the final result. I just used a still image for practice, but the real one I'm going to do will be video. I just need to FILM the video asset still *sheepish grin*.

1) Original photograph.

2. Crushed the brightness, made it kind of bluey.

3. Made the sky even more inky blue than the rest of the photo. Used a feathered mask to make it blend in with the road.

4. Added some spots on the ground where the street lamps will hit.

5. Added some glow to the street lamps as well as a the fall-off from the light. This wasn't necessary but I liked the look better with it than without.

6. Added some lights to the traffic lights and cross signal.

"Can We Talk About...?" 'Glee'

If you haven't heard about Glee then you've been living under a rock.

I'm sorry to be harsh, but it's true.

Honestly, I can't believe that it has taken me this long to write about since I've probably watched the Sneak Peek Premiere episode about 10 times since it aired. Not kidding. And it's also currently sharing the throne with several other television series that are my favorites even though only one episode has aired thus far.

It aired on May 19th after the American Idol season finale and the rest of the season will continue on Fox "in the fall". The only reason I'm using quotes there is because I don't know the exact date in the fall it will be starting up. Personally, I hope that Fox's version of "in the fall" means "next monday" but I'm pretty sure that's what they call "wishful thinking".

Anyway, you've been reading this and you're probably thinking, "Laura, get to the point. Why should I watch this show? Why is it so apparently awesome?" Well, let me lay it out for you.

1) It's Not High School Musical
Whatever you think Glee might be, it's not. And I know lots of people who think it's going to be like High School Musical. But in those movies, characters have been known to break into song for absolutely no reason. With this show there's a reason for the music: the Glee Club. Also, the music in Glee is about 10 kajillion times better than HSM. In the premiere alone: 'Respect', 'Rehab' and 'Don't Stop Believing'. And believe me, I can't stop listening to the show's version of 'Don't Stop Believing'. It's incredible. Which brings me to my next point...

2) A Talented Cast
Most of the cast in HSM are marginally talented (kind of. Personally I think nails being scratched on a black board is preferable to Vanessa Hudgen's so-called singing) but the cast of Glee is WAY WAY talented. When you listen to the show's reditions of the songs mentioned above, that's the cast singing. There's no stand-ins or lipsynching to another singer's voice. Nope. That's their singing. Lea Michele, who plays Rachel Berry, has the most gorgeous voice of the cast (IMHO). She was in my favorite musical, Spring Awakening, as the lead Wendla and in the show she sings a song from Les Mis called 'On My Own' and it literally has given me chills every time I have watched the premiere episode.

3) Interesting Characters
OK, sure. You've got two of the high school standards: The Betchy Cheerleader and the Cool Quarterback. But they're with a twist. The Betchy Cheerleader is also the president of the Celibacy Club and the Cool Quarterback wants to sing and can play the drums. But there's also the cast of misfits that is the Glee club; Emma Pillsbury, the teacher who's a germiphobe but also has a huge crush on Will Schuester, (the lead adult) who's the spanish teacher but really wants to turn the Glee club around. The cheerleading coach, Sue, is coniving and enjoys the fame that the Cheerios (that's the name of the cheerleading team) have brought upon her. My personal favorite is Will's wife, Terry, who I am pretty sure is ligimately crazy.

4) A Good Message
I'm going to get cheesy for a moment, so prepare yourself. The message that this show is sending (so far) seems to be a pretty good one. It's all about being true to who you are instead of what other people expect you to be. Like Rachel says to Finn (who's the Quarterback, by the way) "You need to stop caring what other people think of it. You're better than all of them." The show is about fighting and working for your dream and what you believe in. And when they sing 'Don't Stop Believing' at the end of the episode, it's a really frigging uplifting moment.

"Can We Talk About...?" Pixar's 'Up'

Can I just take a moment to tell you how excited I am about Pixar's new release, Up? Thank you.

HOLY CROW I AM SO EXCITED!!1!

Currently, my desktop backgrounds are Up themed ones: the main desktop is Dug and the secondary is of Russel and Carl. My screensaver is the Meet Dug screensaver from the official Up website. Every time I see a TV spot for Up I get all giddy and start squealing. I get this happy swooping feeling whenever I read a review about it.

It's like I'm in love or something.

Isn't this something a crazy person would do if they were in love with someone? Put a picture of them as their desktop background, have a photo slideshow of him or her be the screensaver, get all happy and giddy whenever they see that person.

Oh my god.

This is totally why I don't have a boyfriend, isn't it?

It's because I'm already in love.

With a movie.

But seriously, I can't help it. I haven't seen it yet, but like all Pixar films, I am eagerly anticipating its release. What I'm not so pleased about is that I will be working when it opens on Friday. Of course, I am pleased that I am once again employed, so you know, I'll have to deal.

Anyway, I'll be writing my review of it after I see it on Friday. Because I finish at 9pm there's a show at 9:20pm and 9:50pm at my local theater I'll be seeing it after my shift. Now to coerce someone into seeing it with me...

A song I wrote that was inspired by Maureen Johnson's novel Girl at Sea which is one of my favorite books ever. I think I've read it about 5 times despite having to read 50 different books this year.

50 Book Challenge Update

This is just an update on how I'm doing with the 50 Books in One Year Challenge I set myself at the beginning of the year.

I'm doing pretty well, I'm almost half-way, which is good because we're almost half-way done with the year. treasure hunting the interwebs

One of my favorite things about the internet, is finding little pieces of treasure in the form of awesome blogs and websites purely by accident, chance and luck. Usually, I'll be reading something on a site that I frequent and then click a random link and wind up somewhere AMAZING.

For example, today I was reading a recap of an episode of The Office on Television Without Pity and I found this fantastic blog called Cakewrecks which features professional cakes gone horribly and hilariously wrong.

Then there's this LINK which you might not want to press, actually, because it's pretty annoying.

And there's really cool ones like this guy, Mike Matas, who is a photographer. I don't remember how I came across his stuff, but I always go to it when I'm looking to a) find inspiration or b) feel artistically insignificant.

I am not a Trekkie, but...

...the new Star Trek movie was really freaking good. It was one of those movies that I had been anticipating for a really long time because of the trailer and I was not disappointed by its awesomeness. I kind of can't wait to go watch it again.

There were several reasons why I liked this movie, but I'm just going to mention the two that everyone seems to be talking about (with good reason) before moving on to why I, personally, loved this movie.

The awesome young crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

First, is the cast. J.J. Abrams picked a stellar cast that just meshed together so well. Chris Pine did a fantastic job playing the young badass Kirk and Zachary Quinto was a great Spock. I don't think I've seen greater facial control in an actor, ever.

Second, I was never bored. There was a fight scene right from the get go, and the pace never slowed up, so there was always something to think about in every single scene. I don't think my mind deviated from the story line at all because it couldn't. The amount of action never let it.
However, the real reason I loved this movie so much is not because of the cast or the writing. It was the effects. This movie reminded me why I want to be a special effects artist.

There's this one part, that can be seen in the trailer, where a planet consumes itself and it's probably the coolest effect in the whole movie. It's definitely the part where I'm pretty sure I stopped breathing as I took in visual effects marvel before me on the screen, then when it was done, the breathing started again with a whispered, "fucking cool".

See, told you it was really fucking cool.

Yesterday, I wasn't watching a movie. I was actually in space. On the USS Enterprise. Where there were laser gun fights, and black holes and a planet consumed itself before my very eyes. Forget the whole "suspension of disbelief" thing. Disbelief was crumpled into a ball, set on fire, then thrown out a window 40 stories up into the ocean where it sunk to the bottom where it will never be heard from ever again.

1) Website = not going so well. Because it's for ME, I keep changing my mind. I think I'll just have to settle on something and then change it by season. That's what I plan on doing with my branding colors. Since I also cannot settle on them.

2) I need to post something on my YouTube channel. I've been neglecting it. But the song I want to do I don't know how to play, exactly. I might just end up doing an a capella self-harmonization version of it instead of trying to learn it on guitar (I can't find the tablature and cannot play a song just by listening to it).

3) I'm back in drawing cycle again. Kind of. Usually it's either music OR drawing. Right now it's both. Because I kind of have time for both. So that's fun. I drew outside today until all the bees, wasps, and other forms of NATURE made me withdraw back into my cave (my room).

4) I'm back in crappy teen romantic dramedy mood again with my movies. How do I know? I just finished watching "A Cinderella Story". That movie with Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray? Yeah. That one. I have a love/hate relationship with this particular mood of mine. I love it because it means I'm happy (because these shitty movies make me happy somehow) and I get to indulge in my oft-neglected super-duper-girly side. I hate it because it's embarassing. Also I feel ashamed to be watching such superficial films instead of artsy smart ones (like my film buff-self would) or wicked-cool actions or sci-fictions (like my visual effects geeky-self would).
HOWEVER. All will be returned on Friday when...

5) STAR TREK COMES OUT!!! I honestly can't wait. I'm not even a Star Trek fan. I don't think I've even watched a single episode. But Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are in it, so that's a draw right there. But I won't pretend that they're the only reason. I was watching the trailer one day and there's this part where THE WORLD IMPLODES and as it did MY MIND EXPLODED. The effects are so beautiful I want to cry. And that's why I want to see this movie. The boy eye-candy for the girly-girl and the effects eye-candy for the visual effects geek.

the launch of lauranicole.ca

For a few months, I had the address lauranicole.ca redirect to this blog, in lieu of putting up a real website. However, since graduation, it's occurred to me that I'll be needing to have an actual website upon which to host my portfolio and stuff. So I finally cracked and bought a hosting package and now if you go to lauranicole.ca you'll be directed to a page with a "coming soon" flash video on it and several links (one of them leading here).

If you visit that page you'll also notice that I've given myself a deadline to finish the thing: two weeks. And I'm really going to try to stick to that deadline and have the website all worked out in two weeks for its final launch onto the interwebs. It might also co-incide with the launch of my new live webcast show. I'm not sure.

On this blog I'm going to be posting some of my progress, including images, and links to resources that I have found to help me. So here's the first bit.

I used www.videocopilot.net to help me with the coming soon page. It's in a tutorial called "Disintegration" that's really super helpful. Though the lighting was my idea. I liked the way it looked like it was a light shining through water and the words were floating off into the murky depths...

In the corner of my Children's Literature exam paper, I decided to write a haiku about one of the novels we read in that class called "Bridge to Terabithia". You've probably heard of it. If you plan on reading it, however, DO NOT READ THIS NEXT PART BECAUSE IT WILL SPOIL THE ENDING.

It went something like this:

as you may know by now, I really like any sort of site that lets you socialize and (essentially) pimp yourself out to other people (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube. Et cetera). Recently, I really like dailybooth.com. The homepage of the site explains it best: "Your picture, your face, every day for years. Beautiful, right? Not only that, get your own gorgeous widgets and fleet of social features - free." So you take a picture of yourself every day (or, since I usually forget, ALMOST everyday) for a year and then you can see your evolution. Cool, right? And then you can follow your favorite people (for me, YouTubers).

strangely creative things

Going to a school where there's a really good arts program means that you often run into a lot of weirdly creative things while on campus. Here are two that I ran into yesterday.

1) This thing, in one of the University buildings, was made out of toilet paper, and were hanging in the hallway. It was weird, and people had ripped part of it down (thanks, jerks) because when I had passed it earlier, it wasn't drooping quite as much, but it still looks kind of cool. I don't know why it was there.
2) This is weird and creepy and could have been done by someone at my college or the university where my college is because it was in the one building that both schools share. I'd like to think this was the doing of my school since it was in the building where the animation school is located. Anyway, this was in a stairwell, and I thought it was strangely creative.

If I do say so myself, this is one of my cleverer ideas. A gift for one of my friends from the theater where I used to work, the wrapping paper is made of a left-over roll of ticket paper that I nicked a while ago and used a name tag as the gift tag.

Weird Comments and PMs on YouTube

If you are on YouTube, you probably get a couple of these either as a PM or a Channel Comment and they're pretty freaking annoying or just plain weird.

What I'm talking about is Channel Pimping and weird comments. Channel Pimping (that's what I like to call it) is when someone sends you a message on YouTube saying, "Hey, I subscribed to you, subscribe to me back or I'll unsubscribe to you!" except that the message probably looks something more like,

"i subed u sub me back or i'l unsub u!"

Because if there's one thing I know about YouTube, it's that most comments like that are pretty grammatically incorrect.

I've received a few of these, but I have the unfortunate habit of deleting these, so I can't share any with you, but here are a few of the weird PMs that I have recieved on The Sisterhood of Awesome and my personal channel, Lauar21. Though I suppose they're not so "Private" now, eh?

This one was on the Sisterhood of Awesome, so I don't know who they are asking about glasses, but I'm guessing me because I often switch from wearing no glasses in one video to wearing glasses in the next. The answer to this question, though, is yes, I wear glasses. No, they are not a particularly strong prescription, and no, I don't wear contacts. I just can't see very well in the videos where I don't wear my glasses.

Yeah. It was featured on nerdfighters.com on the front page and I am KIND OF really super proud of it. Considering that it's the first time I've made a kinetic typography video, it's not half bad. I used After Effects and a lot of time and creativity to create this.

50 Book Challenge

This year - and I totally stole this idea from other people so this isn't an original idea - I am going to read 50 books. It's kind of like my "New Years Resolution".

However, unlike most people who make up New Years Resolutions - which, just so we're clear, I've always thought were kind of stupid and I have never made one unless I have to come up with SOMETHING for religion class in elementary and/or high school - I actually intend to do it. And not give up within a month.

Something that I really enjoy about the internet is the various ways in which you can connect with a wide range of people and the different social networking platforms you can use.

Personally, I use several of these. Among them: Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and YouTube.

Facebook, some say, is a waste of time. And I'll admit that most of my time spent on Facebook is time spent procrastinating on something else. However, I have found this to be a handy way of keeping in touch with family in other parts of the world as well as friends that I knew in high school and don't see anymore. It's fun to just see what people that I when I was 5 are up to. Social networking with other people-wise, it's not so great. I don't want strangers seeing my personal photos, particularly, or having complete access to my contact information, but it's a good way to keep in touch with people you know. Or knew.

Twitter is my ultimate waste of time, but it's sometimes useful. Lots of people have asked me what the point is of updating what you're doing every minute of day. And I tell them that it's just a fun exercise in consciseness and also - if you're following other people in the same industry as you - what's happening/new in the industry. I've gained followers by mentioning what I'm doing on motion graphics work and progress that I'm making, for example.

I am relatively new to MySpace. I had one when I was a teenager and the internet was still relatively new to me. I deleted the account a while ago. I signed up for it again today as a MySpace Musician so that I can get some more of my music out in the world because that seems to be working for people. I'll have to update this later when I find that there's a point to having a MySpace.

Finally, YouTube. It's no secret that this is my favorite networking site of all. And you wouldn't think that a site with videos of laughing babies with gas and skateboarding dogs would have much to offer except a fun way to procrastinate. But I've met several fantastic people through YouTube who I consider friends and it's a really fun - and rewarding way of sharing yourself and what you do with the world. I love getting comments on my videos - good or bad (preferrably good) and I love making comments on other people's videos and getting responses that stem a conversation.

I love lots of people, but I'm not IN love with anyone, if that's what you're getting at.

I think they look weird. My friend Joe got blue ones a while ago - he's stopped wearing them now so I can say this - and they looked strange. I mean, Joe has olive skin, REALLY dark hair and naturally REALLY dark brown eyes so the blue looked super unnatural on him. I mean seriously, what Lebanese guy has BLUE eyes?
So no. I prefer real colored eyes.

25. Have you ever bungee jumped?
Nope. Though it looks like fun but I would probably only do it if I were dying of some terminal disease as part of my Bucket List.

No I have not and I do not intend to.

my mum asked me to make these for her as little reminder cards so she wouldn't have to use sticky notes anymore. Even though I get greatly annoyed by those reminder notes, I guess these are better since they won't waste paper as thoroughly anymore.

They're made to be the size of a business card, and the first two (the ones about the dirty and clean dishes) are meant to be printed on opposing sides of the same page to make it reversible. I did the little drawings in Photoshop on my tablet.

i am constantly under the impression that more people should be watching CBS's How I Met Your Mother, which quite simply is the best sitcom on television that has a laugh track.

Not only does Bob effing Saget provide the voice over for the main character Ted, but Neil Patrick Harris is one of the principal characters on the show. Also, this show has great potential to provide popular culture with sweet catch phrases that trumps the likes of "YOU'RE FIRED!" and "That's hot!"

I was upset by the fact that not many people I know have been watching it, so I recruited my sister into watching it, who in turn recruited her boyfriend into watching it. And recently, some of my friends have started watching it too. So at least I don't feel so lonely anymore when I say things like "LEGENDARY" or "Haaaave you met Ted?"

My favorite episode, by far, has been the Slap Bet episode in which Barney and Marshall make a bet and the wager is that the winner gets to slap the loser as hard as they possibly can.

As I said, this show has great potential to have an effect on popular culture.

I wouldn't go as far to call this show a "cult hit", but I don't know many people who watch this show despite the fact that it's currently in it's fourth season of being on the air.

Another really cool thing that show does is it draws you into the world of the show by making things that they mention actually exist. Such as the following websites that are mentioned in a couple of the episodes:

My friend Amanda reminded me of another thing that makes the show so incredible. They brought back the HIGH FIVE. And not just your general high five. The specialty high fives - my favorite among them being the Freeze Frame Five. How can you go wrong with a show where the characters are giving each other high fives all the time? Answer: You can't.

three reasons why you should watch NBC's The Office (if you aren't already)

If you're not watching the new season of NBC's The Office, why the heck not? And don't say it's because it's on at the same time as Grey's Anatomy on ABC. I mean, sure, they may have McDreamy but do they have John Krasinski -- the best looking and funniest normal guy on television? I don't think so.

So if you're wishy washy about wanting to watch The Office, here's three reasons why you should run to your local video store and rent the first three seasons of the most awesome show on television.

1. Michael Scott
I honestly can't think of a more awkward, funny character on television. Sometimes he's just so awkward that it's painful to watch. But Michael Scott is just so genuinely a goofball even though he screws up and tries to hard that it's just hard to dislike this character. You can tell that he really likes his staff and he just wants to be friends with these people, even if they don't want to be friends with him.
Steve Carell is such a talented actor and comedian that he very successfully pulls off this goofy character. You have to give him massive props for staying in character so well and not cracking up from half the lines that Michael has (though if you watch the blooper reel on the DVD for season 4, you'll see that he does crack up a lot. But you can't really help it sometimes). Steve just has this irresistable charm that he brings to the screen and to his character that it would honestly be a shame if you missed his performance.

2. Pam and Jim
The most talked about aspect of the show is the "will-they-won't-they" storyline between Pam and Jim. And honestly, it was this storyline about how they like each other but can't do anything about it that got me hooked on the show.
Add that to the fact that both actors are very good looking and John Krasinski and Jenna Fisher just make such an adorable pair on screen that it's very hard to look away.
John does a fabulous job playing the supposed slacker who constantly plays pranks on his office-mate, Dwight (stapler suspended in jell-o, anyone?) and finds the things his boss does to be both humous and exasperating.
Jenna is fantastic playing the office receptionist who is constantly looked down upon by her boss Michael, who doesn't really believe that she's a member of the office team so much as a good looking personal assistant at times.
The chemistry that John and Jenna have on the screen is explosive and if the characters were real people, I would love to be friends with them. Hell, I'd love to be friends with the real people who portray them anyway because both the characters and the actors just seem to be such smart, cool people.

3. Dwight and Angela
Rainn Wilson is amazing. I can't even begin to tell you how amazing Dwight is because ... words can't even describe.
(*** And this is where I got tired and just wanted to finish writing this so that I could go have a nap. I'll edit this part later ***)
Actually, yes, they can. And there's four of them: Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica.
And his relationship with Angela is the weirdest thing ever. Talk about strange couples.

For those of you who don't know, TIFF is the Toronto International Film Festival and it's pretty much the most exciting celebrity event to happen in Toronto all year.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's just The Most Exciting Event To Happen In Toronto All Year.

We're going to watch Burn After Reading, that new film with George Clooney and (OMG!) Brad Pitt.

We're staying in a hotel over night tomorrow so that we can celebrity hunt at night and be downtown for our festival screening on Saturday.

We've come up with an itinerary that goes something like this:

Check into hotel
Go to Eaton Center for shopping, go to dinner
Go back to hotel to freshen up (tentative)
Go celeb hunt at Secret Life of Bees screening (tentative)
Celeb hunt at Burn After Reading Gala Screening (MUST)
Possible resuscitation of Tina

good news for you and some bad news for me

First, the bad news for me: my town just got a little bit crappier than it already was.

"How is that even possible?!" I hear you ask in astonishment.

Very simple. A vast majority of the awesome is leaving to live at university this year. This includes my friend Jenny and her BF Pat, Brandy, Jason and Nick (though, granted, they're not that far and I'll still see them since my school is on the same campus) as well as some of my friends from work including Evelyn, Chloe, Peter, Jen, Andreas, Jared and Gonzalo. And some others that I will probably remember when I'm done typing this and will have to mention in an edit.

The fact that they're all away from home, living on their own makes me very sad and lonely (especially because Joe - my only friend to still be living in my town this school year - is still out of the country and won't be back until next month) and also insanely jealous.

I'm ready to move out of this house, I just can't really afford to right now. I'd need to have a roommate and all the potentials are currently living in residence (BLAST YOU ALL).

Eff. I can feel the crushing weight of this crap hole bearing down on me as I type this.

So on to the GOOD NEWS (for you. And me, actually. HURRAY!)

The good news, is that your week just got a LITTLE more awesome.

caffeinated creativism

Someone asked me a while ago (like A WHILE AGO. As in, like a couple months ago) why I chose to have my web address as caffeinatedcreativism.com.
At the time, I chose it because I was drinking coffee and thinking to myself, "what would be a good word to describe me? CREATIVE! Now, let's add the main chemical to coffee to that..." and VOILA! Caffeinated Creativism.

Now, as websites go, it's a pretty hard one to spell as I later came to the conclusion that NO ONE knows how to spell the word "caffeine" correctly.

Even me. I remember having to look it up when I registered my domain name.

But it was just today that I came up with a thingee that basically explains what the term "caffeinated creativism" means.

Caffeinated creativism means:
1) That you work best when you are awake
2) That you are most creative when you have caffeine in your system
3) The resulting hyper-ness from caffeine gives you AWESOME ideas to work with when you're trying to be creative in whatever it is you're doing

So yeah, I am in a fairly consistent state of being creatively caffeinated.

Anyway...

I woke up on Saturday morning and went through my usual routine:

Roll myself out of bed (sometimes literally)
Shuffle to kitchen to make coffee
Wait for coffee
Pour coffee
Go back to room

Check Facebook
Check YouTube

I did something along the lines of this (see screen capture below) when I was doing number 8:
Then I proceeded to have a mini panic attack and then went to my channel page and was all, HOLY CRAP I'M #70 Most Viewed (Today) - Directors - Canada (!!!!!!)

Then I checked later, and I was #55. See:
And now it says nothing. Because I stopped being number 55 most viewed of Directors channels in Canada.

But whatever. Thank god I got screen captures of it as proof. And even though it doesn't have the little medal thing on my channel anymore, you and I know the truth - that I WAS at some point honored by YouTube. And I was very happy about it.

Need to get ready for work now.

...or you know - TEXT. I've just been posting Vlogs that I've done. That's got to be SUPER boring for the people who might have found this site via my YouTube channel (sorry about that. Hope the old stuff entertained you).

The reason I haven't posted art in a while, is because I haven't done much. Well, that's a bit of a lie. I've done stuff, I just haven't SCANNED it or done it digitally. I've been doing everything on paper lately.

And I've also found that my talent has taken a turn for the worse. Case and point, this drawing, which is horrible:It's kind of a picture of me. Kind of not. Actually I think the file name of the drawing is actually "Me - ISH.jpg".

But I have been up to other stuff. Like designing something for a t-shirt like these:

As you can tell from other posts, I've started a Vlog. I really enjoy it. I constantly get ideas for stuff I want to Vlog about but I've settled on 1-2 videos per week and I if I made a video every time I got an idea, it would be more like 1-2 per day.

Maybe I should take the ideas I decide not to do a video about and make it into a blog post instead so that a) the idea doesn't get wasted; b) if gives me something to talk about on here and; c) gives anyone who actually reads this something to, you know, READ. And maybe I won't feel bad for wasting good ideas/putting good ideas off all the time.

There's not much else for me to talk about here. This post is more out of guilt for lack attention than anything else.

I realized that I haven't REALLY updated this in a while other than that picture I posted of The Dark Knight opening weekend (it finally calmed down last weekend, but Mama Mia continues to sell-out like every weekend for the dinner-time rush).

So, the reason I haven't updated in a while is due to several reasons which essentially boil down to the fact that not much has been going on. In fact, I'm kind of bored. And by "kind of" I mean very.

I WANT SCHOOL TO START AGAIN!!!

Though today (yesterday, actually, since it's 1 A.M.) was an exception because I went for sushi with Jen and Laura (!!!!) and then played Scrabble at Jen's house before going to the pub for drinks (the photo in this post was taken at the pub. I was illustrating the philosophy of putting stuff on your head. I wasn't really that drunk). I had so much fun.

The rest of the day prior to the sushi I was drawing. I had kind of fallen out of the habit of drawing every day and thus when I went to draw a picture the other day, any talent and/or skill I may have had left me completely. I realized that if I actually intend to be good I need to draw every day and make it part of my morning routine. Much the same way that making coffee and checking my email, Facebook messages and YouTube account have become routine for me.

Speaking of YouTube, I am so addicted to it. I've been watching Vlogbrothers a lot and I am such a fan of them. They're just so super-nerdy and awesome that it hurts a little bit. They're very interesting, humorous, creative people and as we all know, that's my favorite kind of people.

dark knight madness

This was the crowd for the 10:15pm show of "Dark Knight" tonight. It was pretty insane. I can't believe that we encountered this many people to sell them tickets. The mind just boggles. And what's worse, it that the line went OUT the door, out the camera's view. Crazy stuff. Hope it was worth it for these people. I haven't seen it yet, but I heard it was phenomenal. Of course this was said for the "Batman Begins" and I couldn't stand that one. Then AGAIN, I also hate Christian Bale and Katie Holmes (neither of whom can act his or her way out of a paper bag). The only attraction for "Dark Knight" is Heath Ledger and Gary Oldman (the latter of whom was the only attraction to the "Batman Begins" and he wasn't in it NEARLY enough).

M-O (short for "Microbe-Obliterator", seen on the left) is my favorite little robot (after WALL•E, of course) because he's so OCD with cleanliness that it's awesome.

You know what's sad? The fact that I couldn't fall asleep last night because I'm just that excited to watch WALL•E at midnight tonight. It's like I'm 5 years old again and it's Christmas eve. For me, the day that PIXAR movies premiere is pretty much like a religious holiday. Only it's not like I worship PIXAR daily or have a shrine in my room dedicated to the company (I don't. Really. The shrine in my room is for Harry Potter. Please THIS POST for more details). It's just that I look forward to their movies with as much enthusiasm as a 7 year-old looks forward to Santa coming on December 25th.

However, unlike Christmas where the presents are all surprises, I've been spoiled for my PIXAR holiday present for the last few months because I've read and watched anything and everything about WALL•E that I could get my grubby little hands on. Not that I really care or actually FEEL spoiled at all. If anything, everything I've read and watched has just served to make me more excited for this movie.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all my friends for being so understanding of my WALL•E obsession and still loving me despite all my annoying PIXAR talk. You'll only have to bear it for a little while longer - at least until WALL•E leaves theaters and then again when it comes time for it to be released on DVD.

PS: Go buy your copy of the WALL•E soundtrack from iTunes right now. It's so awesome! I'm listening to it right now. I love the themes for WALL•E and M-O the best.

Today, as I look through my window at yet another grey, crappy, boring day, I come to realize how lucky I am to live near Toronto. Because I'm so bored, I decided to check out toronto.com to see what was happening in my province's capital city that would be pretty darn cool to attend. Today, I decided that I was bored enough to bake something and so I pulled up my favorite food blog, SmittenKitchen.com, and found the recipe for "World Peace" cookies, which I've been meaning to try out ever since I had fabulous results with the last cookie I made from a recipe from that site called the Margarita Cookie. YUM! About half-way through making the dough, I realized that this was bound to be an epic baking failure, and decided to document it, just in case it actually DID work out and then I could say that I'm an awesome baker-type person. However, the only thing I'm apparently talented at baking is my semi-famous tea biscuits and I've come to realize that the name of the cookies - "World Peace" Cookies - is a complete lie because I felt anything BUT peaceful while I was baking them today.
So, the dough, as seen in the photo above, doesn't look exactly like it should. For example, the dough shouldn't have looked like a clump of dirt in my hand.

Above, a slightly blurry photo of the dirt clods when I put them in the fridge to cool for three hours.
I used the timer function on my iPod to count down the three hours that I had to leave it in the fridge. At around this time, I opened the fridge to feel how packed the dirt logs were, and they felt like they may actually work and stick together like they should. However, when three hours passed and I opened up rolled packs to start slicing the logs into cookies, this is what happened:
Not fun. More dirt-like than before. However I managed to squeeze 11 into a semi-cookie shape much like the way coal gets pressured into becoming a diamond. I sat at the oven door for 12 minutes, watching them bake, making sure that nothing started smoking.
They turned out OK. Very chocolately and crumbly. As I was holding my cookie, trying to eat it, it kept falling apart in my hands. As seen below, I was trying to take a picture of it, and just managed to before it dropped onto the table.

Knowing what an epic failure these cookies were going to be, I also made garlic tea biscuits to make up for it, and to make myself feel better about my cooking skills. I ate 4 while they were cooling after coming out of the oven.

Here's two drawings I did of me and my friends - drawings that I call "the other family photos". The bottom one is one I did a while ago - circa last summer - and the top one I did just yesterday. I've improved quite A LOT, if I do say so myself. I'm not sure what happened to the color version of the old drawing, but you can still see the difference in quality from then to now.

What's classier than a beaver in a fedora? Answer: not friggen much. This stylish beaver is sporting round reading glasses, a navy fedora and matching navy suit jacket. Someone get the band started; this beaver is one hip water and land dwelling, tree eating, flat tailed awesome guy!This lovely young doe is as shy and quiet as deer come but with a spunky nature. She likes to kick it with her black suede boots and funky pink and purple fur.
This duck is one artsy chick! Take note of the purple beret and scarf which awesomely compliments the yellowish white feathers and make her bill and feet POP! This duck may have flat feet, but she knows how to cut a rug!
And finally, we have this strapping young blob monster who just can't help but let people know how much he loves New York City. In fact, he loves it so much that he hardly takes it off. He may be a bit of slob, but ladies, just take one glance into his gorgeous eye and you'll fall in love with his charm! Who can resist a one eyed, fanged blob of goo? No one.

I got a tablet today. It's actually really awesome. I just have to learn how to handle it properly. I've also got to get used to the annoying noise that "Ink" makes when it writes. It's like this annoying scratchy sound. Anyone on a mac who also uses a tablet will know what I'm referring to. I've gotta turn this noise OFF! Anyway, here's some drawings I colored in and traced today. They're the sketches I posted earlier. So, enjoy, I guess. :)

Ps: It took me about a gazillion tries to do that colon/bracket emoticon because the handwriting recognition thing wouldn't read it. Awesome ;)

I woke up today thinking two things:

That is right, my fine friends, I am done done done-zo like dinner. SWEET SUMMER YOU ARE MINE!!! BUAH HAHAHAHAHA!

I had some whole "reflection" on the past year planned for this entry - I even started writing it on the bus last friday - but I decided not to go that route. Not only does it scarily hark back to my Catholic School religion class days, but I don't really believe in what I wrote anymore.

Plus I lost it. So some lucky punk is gonna have a good laugh when he finds it.

So plans for the summer:

In addition to working at the theater, I'm going to be doing some work for my friends building websites and such. Like one for Jenny who GOT INTO YORK'S ACTING CONSERVATORY! (and also !!!!!!) I really want to do one for Joe for his photography but I know he has issues with putting his work into a public venue.

I've also got an art project to work on which involves me drawing 42 cartoon versions of the people I work with at the theater.

I've already done some random drawings and stuff. I'll scan it in later.

And I'm planning a screenplay that I really want to write a first draft of this summer. Like, I ACTUALLY want to get it done. Now if I could only get this bloody TREATMENT out. Arg!

Hey! It Looks Like a Website Now!

As opposed to looking like a DVD menu, like it did before.

I can't believe that I've color branded myself with pinks and purples. I think I'm pretty much crazy. That is the only explanation for it. I plead temporary insanity.

But cool thing, I used GIMP for this project which is like an Open Source version of Photoshopola (sort of). I find the Mac version kind of annoying because everything is separate windows and I accidentally minimize things to my task bar thingee. And you have to double click the windows - one to activate the window and one to choose your tool or start painting or whatever.

But it gets the job done fairly well, and if you can't afford Photoshop (like me) it's a great altertnative.

See also, Inkscape, which is like an Open Source version of Illustrator and actually IS awesome. I didn't use it for this, but I've used it for other things and it's pretty great to use. Thought I'd just mention it anyway.

The other day, I was talking to my friend Corey and he suggested to me, as a Harry Potter fan, to find the "alternate soundtrack" to the first movie called Wizard People, Dear Readers. It's one of the funniest things I have ever watched in a long time. Basically, you burn (or buy) the CD with the commentary on it and play it on a CD player while syncing up the DVD with it.

I also found this site: www.illegalart.org (I'm not sure if they're related to the same people who have posted Wizard People, but whatevs). I really like some of the experiments they have done. Particularly, the Suggestion Box and Personal Space. I actually want to give Suggestion Box a try for myself just to see what I can come up with at the end.

I want to get involved with something artsy. Maybe start a sketching group or a writing group. Or something like Illegal Art where you do interactive art projects.

It kind of reminds me of my FACS class last year when I went to York.

Pixar is the New Harry Potter

For any of you who know me at all, you will know exactly what this means.

If you don't know me at all, I will let you in on a not-so-secret secret.

For a very VERY long time I have been OBSESSED with Harry Potter. And therefore, saying that Pixar is the New Harry Potter means that I am now OBSESSED with Pixar. I came to this realization yesterday when I bought the Wall-E poster off of a website for $26.03. And I don't care. Because I WANT IT.
This does not at all mean that I don't still LOOOOOVE Harry. Because I do. I mean, there's still 2 movies (technically 3 because they're RUINING Deathly Hallows by splitting it into TWO PARTS!! What are they THINKING?!?!) left and then the theme park in 2010 or whatever. But Pixar is my future - it is where I will be working one day. I might as well have a passion for it now.

Anyway, gotta get ready for school.

So this is a banner thing for Caffeinated Creativism (my website) that I made. Though I think I want to go more with white and lighter images for the final thing. As much as I like the whole blackle idea, I really like the way that white looks better. I tried black and green for my original design but it just ends up looking really ... crappy.
I think maybe some white, greens and brownish colors.
Anyway, did this during photography. Love that class.

Here's a link to a simple flash navigation that I made this morning while I was waiting for the bus. I was going to take the Viva instead of the Go because the first Go leaving York is at 10:05. Even if I took the Viva at 8:30 I would get to Aurora by 11:20 which is when the 10:05 bus gets to Aurora.

And that is why the Viva sucks. It takes a zillion times longer on the Viva than on the Go. I love the Go.

So here's my assignment for Typography that's due in class tomorrow. I think they're OK. Nothing really all that special but oh well. This is what you come up with at 7:30 in the morning as you sit in an empty classroom in the TEL building on your day off from school. But you had to be here despite the fact that you don't have class because you needed to use Illustrator - that of which you still don't have at home. Otherwise you'd be AT home right now, still sleeping.

I wonder if I can catch an early enough bus home to make it there in time for Ellen.

At least I didn't waste a GO ride validation making my way here this morning because my Dad drove me in.
